Dan Cleary

July 25, 1946

 November 20, 2017

Sadly, Dan Cleary lost his battle to cancer on Monday November 20th at the age of 71, after 18 months of doing everything he could, both conventional and holistic. He fought to the very end.

His transition to spirit was like going home, he believed. He put all of his faith in God and felt he had a good life & learned many lessons. His faith and hope carried him through a divine intervention. On October 15, 1981 he admitted himself to the treatment program of Bethesda hospital and surrendered his will and committed to a sober life. He started his volunteering in Alcoholics Anonymous by becoming an after care facilitator and helped so many over the next 15 years until the program closed. He always found those who needed him as his sponsoring others and support continued. This last October, Dan received his 36 year sobriety coin. This was a huge accomplishment in his life, as well as a 30 year career with his own company, D.C. Electric, as an electrical contractor.

Throughout Dan’s life, he remained friends with those from his fraternity, Sigma Chi at the University of Cincinnati. Dan studied business and was an extraordinary athlete. Receiving a scholarship for track and field, for his favorite events throwing discus and shot-put.

These lifetime friends have supported one another through the ups and downs of life, and many visits with Dan over the last few months. He loved his family, taking his pups to the dog park, his times on his houseboat (True Love), and his special AFU Wednesday night meetings.

Those who knew him well saw a man who was quiet & gentle. He had a great sense of humor, loved to share stories of his army days, the many trips to the Kentucky Derby provided by his long time devoted friend John Morgan, and how his sobriety had saved his life.

He was devoted and happily married to Jan (32 years), and their two children Jeffrey & Jaclyn. He also leaves behind his other three children Joey, Kaycee, & Scott, as well as their children and a host of neighbors & friends who will feel the loss.

In keeping with Dan’s wishes, there will be no funeral services.
